I’ve spent the last three weeks waiting on the edge of my seat for this one. The call finally came yesterday at about 4:00 am. I’ve never witnessed a home birth, let alone photographed one. The whole experience, both personally and professionally, was simply incredible.
I arrived after the doula, but before the midwives. I was greeted at the door just as I had been in my first two meetings with this family: by two adorable, little, diaper-clad boys eager to welcome me in (which made me feel right at home). The midwife was given the same welcome when she arrived.
This mother made labor look beautiful. This father made supporting a laboring wife, parenting two toddlers, and hosting a house full of women all at the same time look easy. I don’t know how they did that.
Caroline was born at 10:37am. Of course Mom did most of the hard work all morning long, but it was beautiful to see the whole room working together in those final minutes before birth. And then to see Mom’s face in that single moment when she finally got to hold her daughter…. Words fail me.
Birth truly is miraculous. I’m honored to have been invited in to be a part of it.
Welcome to the world, Sweet Caroline! Happy Birth Day.
